Back to House Rabbit Hutch home page

“You have a great rabbit house set up, and seem to advocate the HRS,
but why do you have the Joy of Cooking quote on your assembly page?”

Letter to Allison
Thanks for writing. It sounds to me as if the contrast between my support of the House Rabbit Society and my quoting from the cookbook is confusing you: if I understand you correctly, you likely believe that I support both perspectives. That is, of course, one level of reading the page, but please read on.
Another way of reading would be to recognize the irony of the quotation; similar is Renata’s use of irony in her remark, “Do you want a Rubik cube for your bunnies?” Still, I would not support this reading because, frankly, I find the directions for skinning a rabbit to be disgusting. Having adopted a rabbit who was “too old to breed and too tough for meat,” I do not find the topic to be material suitable for humor—at least not on the pages I sponsor.
Another, more challenging way of reading would be to “deconstruct” the contrasting perspectives. Through deconstruction we can, according to Warren Hedges, “gain insight into how our own sense of ourselves … depends on oppositions that can be deconstructed.” Significantly, I have, in several instances among my pages, included dissenting voices in an effort to help visitors deconstruct the material; doing so, they empower themselves by creating meaning through a conscious, conscientious effort. A few examples include the following:
· My Breakfast poem 118
· Anonymous comment on my Magnetic Poetry
· Comments from Jerome and Mary
Finally, to help visitors in their efforts, I added a few pages addressing deconstruction, and I thank you sincerely for your thoughtful inquiry.
