up Paper Wallets home

Though I never made the series of paper wallets discussed by Ken in Iris*, I did design a one-piece paper wallet (“no scissors, no glue”), and for years I made hand-made paper wallets for my friends. Leaving Arcadia, however, I also left my studio with a friend, and on Christmas, 2001, I gave away “the last of the last” to my cousin. Of all of the wallets I made—some lined with fancy paper, others pressed with flowers, even one decorated with ragatta flags—it was the only one that I was asked to sign. In any case, the template has been posted on this site for over a decade.

“love your paper wallet, wish you had a photo of a finished and folded one.”

To my surprise, I found a leftover wallet—white with peach lining—that I never gave away, so I photographed it (at right; and in various stages of unfolding, below). These additions coincide with the Smithsonian exhibit on Paper Engineering. (Here is a page from the brochure.)

*Actually, I tried to arrange an exhibit. It would have featured wallets, not made at different places but made by different people, and it could have been held not simply “in one of those historical buildings” (Ken, from Iris) but specifically in the Octagon building, when it was still a museum. I sent stacks of a half-dozen white, unfolded wallets to some artist friends, asking them to decorate the blanks in their favorite styles and media. However, not a single one was ever returned.
